so the scotus has unilaterally decided to add al qaeda to the geneva convention, eh? nicely done, supremes. has anyone given any consideration to the fact that when those who are protected under the obligations of a treaty ignore even the most basic tenets of that very treaty that they forfeit the right to those protections? not according to scotus, nope. they are allowed to do whatever the heck they want, but play nice uncle sam, otherwise we’ll throw you in jail.
seriously, how much longer do stevens and ginsberg have? can they really make it two more years? will they have to? if the boneheaded gop base decides to play politics this fall, it won’t matter. bush and cheney will be facing criminal charges and president pelosi will be appointing the supremes as stevens and ginsberg announce their retirement as soon as she’s sworn in. what a sordid state this country truly is in.

since he’s somehow gotten the insurgents in iraq to echo the democrats in congress and demand a timetable. the gop’s gotta just be wetting their pants with glee. any conspiracy theorist worth his weight in salt can link this to the white house. although the spin from the left will be, “see we are causing the insurgency by our presence! the insurgents even say so! and why would they lie about a thing like that???”
hat tip to the cap’n who has a much more serious study of the idea.

so ozzie guiilen called jay mariotti a “fag.” it’s wrong. i know it gets tossed around a lot in locker rooms and just about everywhere else that men gather, but it’s still wrong. there are far too many more appropriate words for mariotti to wimp out with the homosexual slur. and the defense of it was just pathetic, “well, it means something different where i come from.” ok, ozzie. so far the only goood thing to come out of this was deadspin linking to this great piece by bob klapisch.
congress seems wildly close to adopting an amendment to ban flag desecration. now call me crazy, but i think there’s a few more important things on which the united states congress could be spending their time right now. i don’t think it’s right to burn the flag, unless you are properly disposing of a worn flag. nor do i think it’s right to submerge a crucifix in piss, or cover the virgin mary with elephant shit, or to portray bush as hitler, but hey, that’s just me. i mean when a danish paper posted some cartoons of muhammed there was killing in the streets. when salman rushdie wrote the satanic verses there was a tatwa issued saying it was the duty of muslims everywhere to kill him. in a free society you have to accept that some folks are gonna take it too far. look at the the phelps clan. does anyone support what those loons are saying? not any sane people. but short of calling for the death of others, they are free to say what they will because this is america. i’m pretty sure that folks burning flags or pissing on them or shitting on them is not going to destroy america. nor do i think a constitutional amendment is any way to go about stopping them.
now the nytimes on the other hand committed treason and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. they put people in harm’s way. they provided aid and comfort to those who hack off the heads of soldiers and civilians and journalists (let’s all remember daniel pearl). despite their fervent belief that america (or more precisely, george w. bush) is the root of all evil in the world today, they should remember that no amount of appeasement, no amount of concessions, nothing short of conversion or death will satisfy those who pervert islam in the name of conquest.

about a month or so ago i predicted right here on this blog that dubya’s approval rating would be in the mid-40’s by mid june. now it’s late june by a week, but according to rasmussen (who’s got the most accurate polling out there) li’l bushy’s at 44 today. it’s gonna get better. maybe karl does have a deal with the devil after all.

i’ve been thinking about this lately and wondered what others thought. i’ve noticed a tendency in people who are vehemently passionate in their loathing of a particular idea, person or group and the tactics used by said group to adopt those same tactics. when it’s pointed out that they are doing the same things they loathe in others they seem unwilling to admit it, unable to see it, or pass it off as acceptable because the people they loathe do it too.
i’m not singling out any particular person and see this as a widespread phenomenon. it’s not particular to any specific subject or group either. it happens in sports, business, politics, fashion, school…everywhere.
is it acceptable or even logical to adopt the very same tactics you decry as unfair or nefarious when used against an idea, person or group you support to attack those who practice those ways? or does it demean the very idea, person or group (and indeed yourself) that you purport to defend when you do so?

so with the dprk getting ready to launch an icbm, the missile defense shield has finally gone from test mode to operational! ’bout fucking time, eh? we’ve only been hearing about this shit since before matt was _blank”>ferris. i mean really. this is so 80’s i am waiting for jed eckert to show up and scream “because we live here!!” anyway, missile defense is on. is it like a switch? a button? color coded? i want to know dammit!
the usatoday chooses to print either a blatant piece of defeatist propaganda or has been used by the administration as a pawn in a daring gambit to lure the nk’s into actually launching the missile only to have it blown out of the sky by either a aircraft based laser or another missile. that takes balls. i mean this is the shit. north lorea might just might be getting ready to launch an icbm loaded with mirvs headed for the west coast or anywhere in the continental us if it’s a 3-stage taep’o-dong 2. i mean this is freaking cuban missile crisis stuff only worse and nobody’s talking about it.

at least that’s the opinion of one of my far left acquaintances.
but truthout.org has responded to the revelations in the rove case with more bluster. they allege that rove was indicted and that they were used to force him to cut a deal. see, they think that fitzy’s after cheney and that this is just a bit of fitzmas interruptus now luskin told jeralyn at talkleft.com on june 13th that “there has never, ever been any discussion of a deal in any way, shape or form.” somebody’s lying or somebody’s full of shit. wonder if we’ll ever get to find out who?
jason responds to joe lauria’s post article in a comment on americablog.com. curiously his response never addresses the issue of his having impersonated lauria to corrallo. just more bluster and “woe is me” bullshit.
me? i still think rove planned the whole thing as a way to focus attention away from other issues.
meanwhile the democrats are introducing a measure to demand that the president show how he plans to change direction in iraq. they were very careful to say that this was not a timetable. there was no mention of a specific date anywhere in their amendment resolution. but thanks to john kerry, babs boxer and russ feingold’s amendment to be annnounced today the democratic measure with it’s careful embrace of a phased withdrawal and no mention of dates will get some extra oomph: a specific date for american troops to be out of iraq. i don’t care about what other republicans say about him, i just love john kerry. he’s the gift that keeps on giving. i really believe that just about anybody but him coulda won in ‘04. this is gonna be so ugly and so much fun to watch. get out yer popcorn kiddies. also, is there anyway we can get russ to run in ‘08? i mean really, pretty please?

somehow between trips to the beach and vigorously ignoring lefty’s collapse at winged foot i missed a story over the weekend. now it helps that this story was not really linked to in any major way and i can only find glimpses of it in technorati.com, but still, i will do the monk with a whip thing later.
it seems that there was a little piece in the washington post by joe lauria this weekend titled my unwitting role in the rove “scoop”. he pretty much draws and quarters truthout.org reporter and erstwhile condemner of karl rove, jason leopold.
way back when, ol’ jason was screaming from the rooftops that rove had been indicted. and then there came no indictment on the day he predicted it. nor for the following weeks. then finally came word that rove would not be indicted. now along the way jason kept insisting he was right and that if he was wrong he’d “out” his sources. seems like it’s a little late for outing as lauria contends that leopold stole his identity and called someone passing himself off as joe even going so far as to give the source joe’s cell phone number…with one wrong digit. read the article. and then email truthout and ask them how long they’ll continue to support a lying thief.

so jack murtha said on meet the press that he thinks we should re-deploy to freakin’ okinawa. yeah, that’s right around the corner from iraq. only 5,000 miles away. oh, and that’s on a straight flight which unhappily happens to cut right through china. surely they’ll have no problem with our guys winging through.
but ol’ jackie boy has a long history of knowing when to get out of places. seems he was one of the key voices advising bubba to bug outta somalia after the blackhawk down fiasco. hey wow, that worked out well didn’t it? he also was a loud voice urging reagan to pull outta beirut after the marine barracks bombing. not that those two specific instances weren’t cited by the 9/11 commission as key factors in emboldening al qaeda.
i was loathe to criticize rep. murtha in light of his service to the country, however, in light of these revelations i now question not only his positions, but his sanity.

so many of the talking heads who’ve been howling for years that we haven’t gotten zarqawi made an abrupt shift in their rhetoric recently from “we can’t even get zarqawi” to “well we could have had him years ago.” this ignores the fact that a pinpoint strike would have been denounced at the time by the same people who now rail that we didn’t do it. i love the glory of revisionism. not to mention the fact that we were at that time engaged in diplomacy which many hoped would avert war. such a strike would have pretty much ended any talk of that too.
but now we’ve got a dead abu musab and a treasure trove of information which has led to hundreds of strikes in the last week. will it end the insurgency as we know it? doubtful. will it hurt them badly? of course. do i sound like a don rumsfeld press conference? good golly, yes.

the senate voted 93-6 against an idea raised by the esteemed john kerry as an amendment that held that the only us troops that would stay in iraq in 2007 would be those necessary to train the iraqi security forces. the measure was lifted virtually word for word from kerry’s amendment. so it’s no surprise that he was one of the 6 who thought it was a good idea. playing to the anti-war crowd i hopes of support in ‘08? i wonder if he thought it was gonna get more votes.

in the house, crazy eyes pelosi denounced the war as “a grotesque mistake.” maxine waters wants the murtha measure implemented immediately. even though a version of it went down 403-3 already. i say, give ‘em enough rope and we won’t even have to look for pull quotes for this fall. we’ll just broadcast the house debate. lovely.

so i was talking with some folks on a message board today and the topic was ann coulter so inevitably the conversation will turn to the assertion that she’s onje of the few living (or undead) owners of the vagina dentata. evidently one of the guys posted a pic of a dress which got deleted. i of course went searching for said vagina dentata dress. my search toook me to a site discussing designer vaginas which included a link to this village voice article.
i gotta admit i’m a little scared and even more intrigued. i mean a snowy white pooper? it’s like just too freaky!

that last post referenced deadspin as the source of the cornholin’ when it was in fact not the deadspinners. i apologize to them for slandering them and to ace of spades who was in fact the true source. i cannot imagine how i fucked that up.
